There are two primary paths that we take. One of the possible routes we could take from our house would take us through Nashville, Tennessee. Two different courses can get us to Nashville in a hurry. The alternative path takes a turn to the east and travels through Kentucky on the Bluegrass Parkway on the way to Lexington. Shortly after exiting the tunnels, you will arrive in Bluefield, West Virginia, which features a diverse assortment of eateries, retail establishments, and gas stations.

We travel out to the western region of the state to see our relatives. We take day trips from their home to Eerie, where we got our first glimpse of Lake Erie. We like to visit Cooks Forest and Tom’s Run, as well as Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, which is the location of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who has been photographed more than any other in the world.

A scenic drive through elk country that is 127 miles long can be found not far from Punxsutawney. These lovely rolling hills are dotted with traditional homes designed in the country farm style. Elk can be found in great numbers grazing in the pastures that are located along these roadsides. Convenience stores and gas stations in the surrounding area stock maps that highlight the most optimal viewing spots. Because elk are not hunted in this area, they will not become startled if you stop to look at them or take pictures of them.

The Amish communities located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania are visited by tens of hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. We went there as well, and while we were there, we spent the day touring and eating. It is a fantastic learning opportunity. The lawns of these homes are immaculately kept. Quilts sewn by local ladies and put up for sale in local shops that specialize in selling goods made in the area

There are a number of other Amish communities located here and there throughout the state of Pennsylvania. We went to a couple in western Pennsylvania. There are a few of these towns that are located in more remote areas. Smicksburg, Pennsylvania is a charming little town that won our hearts. There was a quaint bakery and restaurant there, and it was through their food that I was able to win over my affections. This is a very small town, but the countryside that surrounds it makes for a very interesting drive in order to get there. The visit to Smicksburg is made more interesting by the presence of gift shops and some historic buildings. In the majority of Amish communities, you’ll be able to buy cheeses, baked goods, homemade quilts, hand-sewn goods, and souvenirs.

We spent the afternoon in Volant, Pennsylvania, which is located in the far northwest corner of the state. This quaint Amish community features a larger collection of locally owned shops as well as a number of eateries. When we were there, the State Fish and Game Commission was in the process of stocking the rainbow trout in the river that cuts through the middle of town. On the banks of the river, there were probably a hundred fly fishermen all competing for the same catch.

Keep an eye out for local festivals.

In Pennsylvania, seasonal festivals are a popular activity that frequently draws large crowds. Make sure to get in touch with the chambers of commerce located in the cities and towns you intend to visit. They have knowledge regarding the festivals, including what to anticipate and when the events will take place. The Autumn Leaf Festival in Clarion, Pennsylvania is without a doubt our most beloved celebration. A significant parade that lasts for more than an hour and a half and that features dignitaries, bands, and amusing rides. During the week of the festival, hundreds of thousands of people visit this region to take in the autumn foliage. Similar events take place in dozens of towns, on alternating weekends.

When we went to Oil City, Pennsylvania, we happened to be there on the day of a festival. The main street, which was named Seneca, was crowded with vendors, and business was brisk in the shops along the street. Although I highly doubt that this was a typical day, it demonstrates that the town must have some kind of activity going on if it is able to boast as many stores. The road is flanked on both sides by historically significant and architecturally stunning old buildings.

We boarded the historic Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad for a ride through the countryside. The train travels slowly along the Oil Creek, stopping at three or four different historic locations along the way. It is a breathtaking journey up a steep and winding valley. The conductor of the train pointed out a Bald Eagle that was flying high above near the peaks of the mountains.

Regional Oddities

Our search for what we refer to as “regional oddities” is one of our most-loved types of searches. The desert landscape stands out as one of the most distinctive features of Arizona and New Mexico. In some other locations, the peculiarities are not as noticeable.

The state of Pennsylvania is home to a wide variety of peculiar rock formations. A park has been built, albeit very clumsily; at this point, it consists of little more than a trail and a sign. Bear Town Rocks is the name given to the rocky formation. The story behind where the name came from is a mystery to me.

Large boulders can be found in this area, some of which rise up to a height of more than 10 meters. The fact that trees are able to grow on the boulders is a peculiar feature. Hardwood On top of the boulders is a variety of different-sized trees. There are some truly massive trees here. The rhizomes and other underground stems travel down the boulders and into the surrounding soil. Although it seems as though the area is covered in untouched forest, I am unable to confirm this assertion.

This quaint park is perfect for spending an hour or two in. Although I have a lot of pictures, the most interesting thing to me was the way the roots were growing down the side of the boulder. Anywhere you go you will find regional oddities. Covered bridges are a local curiosity that can be found in certain counties of Pennsylvania. But I’ll save that discussion for another post.
